Students transferring in from other colleges may have already taken a course equivalent to English 134 (Writing: Exposition) or 133 (Writing: Exposition--ESL) which are the first of a series of English courses required of all Cal Poly students. If so, it will show on the student's transcript and, if the grade in the course was a C or better, the student will receive credit for General Education Area A1, Written Communication, when the transcript is evaluated. These students do not have to take the English Placement Test unless the grade earned in the equivalent course was below a C. This exemption from the EPT will be recorded routinely by the Evaluations Office and since such transfer students will not be taking freshman-level English, they do not have to establish an early qualification for that course.
Applicants who need to take the EPT or document an exemption from it are notified on the Admission Application Status screen viewable through My Cal Poly Portal.
If a transfer student has not completed a college composition course or if the student earned below a C in the equivalent course, he or she should register for the EPT at the earliest possible date so the Writing Skills Office can recommend the appropriate English course before registration.
